Chapter 11

Updating the OS

B0RD OS is meant to improve in place: bug fixes, clearer apps, and new operator features without swapping the panel. Updates always come from a trusted channel for your fleet — never from an anonymous download on a public forum.

Current status

The sign can already check for a trusted update over the same network path used for live launch data (USB ota check / SoftAP POST /api/ota). Until release notes say apply is enabled, treat USB flashing from a trusted workstation as the supported upgrade path.

When apply ships, this chapter will describe: check → confirm version → apply → verify the sign returns to its previous mode. Keep the unit on stable power during any apply.

Until OTA is enabled

  1. Obtain the release image from your organization’s channel only.
  2. Power the sign and connect USB to the workstation used for flashing.
  3. Apply the image with the approved flash procedure for your kit.
  4. After reboot, confirm health over USB or the LAN address, then restore Wi‑Fi and display preferences if the release notes require it.

What to expect after an update

Settings you already configured — home network, base display mode, and similar preferences — are intended to persist across ordinary updates. Read the release notes for any migration steps. If the sign comes up on SoftAP again, rejoin home Wi‑Fi once and re-check the clock and countdown data.
